His origins are unknown. He was born somewhere in Britain on August 16th 1710, possibly in England or Northern Ireland. There was a Robert Bolt who was transported to America in December 1736 on the Dorsetshire. Other possibilities may be that he's descended from one of the following early colonial Bolt settlers: Amias Bolt - arrived August 1618 aboard the Neptune, Annis Boult - a Jamestown settler at Flourdieu Hundred in 1623, and Roger Bolt - filed an inventory in York County in 1705. There are other Bolt men that appear in the early records of the southern colonies. Robert Sr. and Elizabeth had eight children in a twenty-year span from 1744 to 1764 Mary, John and James, appear in several Fauquier County court documents. Robert and family were residing in Fauquier County in 1777 Robert Bolt Sr. first surfaces in Virginia records in June 24th 1752. Robert Sr. next appears as a chain carrier in a survey party in 1755 at Prince William and Fairfax Counties known as Northern Neck Virginia. Robert Sr. served as a juror and is listed in the court minutes at a Fauquier County 1760 survey dispute on August 29th 1760. Fauquier County was Robert Sr. home for many years. His youngest son, Abraham, was born in Fauquier County, as stated in his Revolutionary War pension application, and Robert Sr. is listed as a tenant of the manor of Leeds in Fauquier County in 1777. In 1779 the family began to appear in Henry County, Virginia records. Robert Sr. and his family moved to Henry County Virginia are listed in the Henry County tax rolls of 1782. Robert's son, John, is listed on a Henry County tax list of 1780, and his sons, Robert Jr. and Abraham, enlisted in Henry County Revolutionary War regiments. After the Revolutionary war Robert Sr. and his sons Robert Jar and Abraham moved to Ninety-Six District Laurens County South Carolina. In October of 1784, Robert Bolt pays seven pounds for 300 acres of land along Lick Creek in Ninety-Six District Laurens County South Carolina. In the first U.S. Census in 1790, Robert Balt Sen., Robert Bolt Jr., Abraham Bolt, and Benjamin Bolt, are listed in Ninety-Six District, South Carolina Robert Sr.'s elder sons, John and James, continued to reside in Virginia. Robert Sr. had married Rachel Hellams.

Mary is named in a Fauquier County courthouse injunction bill dated circa 1761/62, filed by "Peyton" vs. Robt. Bolt, stating the following, "...your Orator came up himself to the Place where your Orator found one Mary Bolt now Mary Gerard & a child together with some lumber in the house who said that her Father was actually Removed & only left her there until your Orator came up and ordered her off..."
John Bolt Sr married Celia Phebe Amos
John first appears in Northern Neck Fauquier County Virginia records in a lease signed between his father Robert Sr. and Thomas Lord Fairfax. The lease is dated September 1762 and states that Robert Bolt, his wife, Elizabeth and his son John, leased for three lifetimes, 200 acres of land, at forty shillings yearly rent Source: Fauquier County Virginia Deed Book 1 page 389 1773 Fauquier County court records with his brother James. "John Bolt, James Bolt, William Pickett, Jacob Weaver, Samuel Pepper, John Healey, and Charles Smith acknowledged themselves severally indebted to our Lord the King in the forms following, that is to say the said John Bolt and James Bolt in the form of thirty pounds each..." It is believed that John may have served in Captain Jonathan Lowe's Montgomery County Virginia Militia in 1778. John did, however, secure a substitute, William May, who served under Lt. Lawrence or Torrance and John's brother Robert Bolt Jr. a subaltern officer. They were listed under the immediate command of the Honorable Patrick Henry and William May was dismissed from service in 1779. John is listed on a 1780 Henry County, Virginia, tax list. Robert Sr. appears on a 1782 Henry County tax list, but it's shortly thereafter, that John's father, brothers, Robert Jr. and Abraham, and nephew, Benjamin, migrated to Ninety-Six District Laurens County South Carolina. About 1791-92 John's family moved to Wythe County Virginia. On March 25th 1801, he bought 150 acres along the Dan River in Grayson County Virginia from Joseph Garrett for five pounds. In 1794, John was appointed by Grayson County Court to view a proposed road from Bell Spur to Flower Gap. He also served for a time as a Captain in the Grayson Militia in 1797. John's first wife had died and he remarried to Celia Amos in Patrick County Virginia on 29 July 1803. John died 18 March 1832 and is buried in a small cemetery on the Old Floyd Bolt Farm in Floyd County Virginia.

William Henry Clay "Will" Bolt was the child of Hiram and Lucretia Harris Bolt. He married Anna Sutphin on February 20, 1840 in Grayson County, Virginia. She was the child of John Sutphin Sr. and Celia Hylton Sutphin. She was born in 182. William H. C. Bolt joined Company I (also known as the "Reed Island Rifles") of the Forty Fifth Virginia Infantry on May 29, 1861 at age 41 in Wytheville, Virginia. His cousin Thomas D. Bolt was Captain. Thomas died of measles in Bland County, Virginia on July 20, 1861 and William was elected Captain on August 27th, 1861. He then got sick and was transferred to the reserves in November 1861. In October of 1864 when the Yankees invaded Southwest Virginia, the reserves were called up to protect the salt works at Saltville, Virginia. Most of the reserves consisted of young boys (under 18) and old men (over 45) at this time. William was forty-five years old by now. These proud men fought hard and saved the salt works by routing 5000 union troops, but in the course of the battle they had the Yankees on the run, and foolishly charged across an open field and William Henry Clay Bolt was shot by Yankee gun fire and died on the battlefield. The story has been handed down that his wife had him brought back to Carroll County, Virginia but her children would not let her see the body, so she asked only that she be allowed to see his thumb because the Bolt men had white thumb nails and she could be sure that it was him. (Another version of the story was that the Bolt men had wide thumb nails), He is buried in a field on Cecil Bascomb's farm on the Dugspur road near Laurel Fork, Carroll County, Virginia. He has no marker, just a fieldstone; his wife's probably buried next to him. There are three graves there. I do not know how many brothers and sisters he had. He had two brothers, two nephews and two cousins who served in the Confederacy during the Civil War. His brother Stephen H. Bolt enlisted in Company I, Forty Fifth Virginia Infantry on February 22, 1863 in Hillsvilie, Virginia. He was captured at Piedmont on June 5, 1864 and held POW at Camp Morton, Indiana and exchanged on March 15 1864. He died June 5, 1890 at age 67. Stephen's child Harvey G. Bolt was captured on the same day as his father, at Piedmont, and was exchanged five days earlier from the same POW camp. Stephens other child served in the 4th Virginia reserves from May 16, 1864 until the end of the war. The other brother of Will who served was Leroy. He joined a Patrick County Company K. of the 50th Virginia Regiment at Wytheville. He was promoted to corporal and then served as a Wagoner. He reenlisted in 1862 into Company I of the 45th Virginia Infantry Regiment, where most of his kinsmen and neighbors were serving. He was promoted 1st Sgt. of the Company and toward the end of the war, he commanded the company after most of the officers, were either killed or captured. This was William Henry Clay Bolt's old company that he had captained in 1861-62 Leroy died in 1926. William Henry Clay Bolt's uncle Andrew Jackson Bolt also served Company I of 45th Virginia infantry. He deserted and then rejoined the unit and was present in late 1864. He died of pneumonia March of 1880.

William Franklin Harris went through a lot of trials and hardships in his time and so did his brothers. Frank was born at Pulaski County Virginia on February 6th 1840. Pulaski County Virginia was formed from Montgomery County Virginia and Wythe County Virginia on 1839. The first court in Pulaski County Virginia was held on May 9th 1839. Newbern Virginia was the county seat until 1895. The courthouse burned down and was rebuilt in the town of Pulaski Virginia making it the county seat, which it still is today. The Harris family lived somewhere near Newbern Virginia. When Wade Wilburn was a boy, his mother told him that her grandfather came from Newbern Virginia to Laurel Fork Virginia. The Harris family was all farmers and when they moved from Pulaski Virginia to Carroll County Virginia probably about 1854 they acquired quite a bit of land. Most of their land was located on Dugspur Road between Dugspur Virginia and Laurel Fork Virginia. Frank enlisted in Company F of the 54th Virginia Infantry Regiment on September 9th 1861. He was assigned as courier to regiment commander Colonel Robert Trigg and was later transferred to the Pioneer Corps. Colonel Trigg commended him after the battle of Chickamauga for capturing the state flag of the 22nd Michigan Infantry Regiment during the battle of Snodgrass Hill. Wade Wilburn has visited this exact sight at the battlefield and they say it looks much like it did then. It would be tough fighting there today. A battlefield marker telling of the movements of the troops on that day marks the jumping off point of the 54th in this battle. The 54th saw some of the hardest and meanest fighting of the war. They were soundly beaten at Bentonville, North Carolina on March 19th 1865. The Regiment lost its battle flag to the 14th Michigan Regiment in this battle. The flag was returned to the Commonwealth of Virginia in ceremonies at Lansing Michigan on September 20th 1941. It was placed in the Confederate Memorial Institute by then Governor James H. Price. Frank married Narcissa Jane Bolt also known as Cis on September of 1865 only a few months after the Civil War ended. Narcissa is the child of William H. C. Bolt a soldier who at the age of forty-four was killed in the Battle of Saltville on October 1864. Frank and Cis had nine children, seven boys and two girls.
The 54th Virginia Infantry Regiment roster lists as follows BOLT, WILLIAM H. C.: Sgt. in Co. I. Age 40 in 1860 Carroll County Virginia census, enlisted, 5/29/61 at Wytheville Virginia. Elected Captain 6/27/61. Sick 11/61. No further record, Transferred to the reserves. Killed in action Saltville, 10/2/64.

It is likely that Benjamin was born in Fauquier County Virginia taking into consideration his mother's age at the time of his birth, and his grandfather, Robert Sr., can still be placed in Fauquier at this time. Benjamin's first documented appearance as a young man is in the Laurens County Ninety-Six District South Carolina 1790 census. He may have married while residing in South Carolina, because possible son, Aaron, was born there about 1796. He next appears in Hancock County Georgia 1797 through 1802. Probable son, John, was born in Kentucky about 1798. Around 1825, four Bolt families are residing in Clark County Arkansas Benjamin, Aaron, John, and Abraham are listed on the 1828 Sheriff's tax roll and 1830 census, living near Antoine Township.
James first appears in Fauquier County courthouse records on 24 May 1773 with brother John, "as indebted to our Lord the King". An additional charge appears in November of the same year. James seems to "disappear" from Fauquier County records after that. This may be due to an early death, relocation, or a change in the spelling of the Bolt surname (i.e.: Boult, Bolte, etc.)
Robert Jr. was born on April 27th 1762, most likely in Fauquier County, Virginia. In the autumn of 1784, he served in the Revolutionary War as a subaltern officer in Captain John Dillard's Virginia Militia Henry County Virginia. 1784 was the year that Robert Sr., Robert Jr. and Abraham moved to Laurens County Ninety-Six District South Carolina. Robert Bolt paid seven pounds for 300 acres along a branch of Lick Creek. The land plot was located next to Susannah McHarg's. (It is unknown if the land was bought by Robert Sr. or Robert Jr., but it is believed that Robert Jr. was married to a daughter of Susannah McHarg. The case may be made that it was Robert Jr. based upon a 1786 audited account claim made to the state of South Carolina by Susannah McHarg (Meharg/Maharg) stating ... "after detaining in your office Thirty dollars to Pay the Consideration money for Robert Bolts Grant of 300 Acres of Land." Audited account claims were made to the state for Revolutionary War service. In addition, Susannah McHarg and Margaret Bolt (her daughter??) were buyers at Robert Jr. estate sale in January 1801. Abraham stated in his Revolutionary War pension that he moved to Laurens County in 1784. He received his land grant in 1800. Four Bolt men are listed in the Laurens County Ninety-Six District 1790 census, Robert Bolt Sen., Robert Bolt Jr., Abraham Bolt, and Benjamin Bolt. Robert Bolt Jr. is buried in the McHarg - Hubbs - Bolt Cemetery. A replacement marker for him has been installed in the John Bolt Esq. Cemetery.
The youngest son of Robert Sr. and Elizabeth, Abraham was born in Fauquier County Virginia on August 24th 1764. At the age of 16, Abraham enlisted for Revolutionary War service in Spartanburg District, South Carolina, Captain John Thompson's company attached to Col. Brannon's Regiment, in early September 1780. That fall, Abraham stated that, "...his regiment was pursued and attacked by Col. Tarleton's Dragoons at Blackstock's Plantation on Tyger River." After the Battle of Blackstock's Plantation, Abraham's unit was attached to General Daniel Morgan's army. Six weeks later, on January 17th 1781, they engaged Col. Tarleton once again at the Battle of Cowpens. Abraham was "...detained to attend the wounded when the army moved on to North Carolina and did not overtake the army again till after the battle of Guilford."(Courthouse). Abraham then resigned and went home to Henry County Virginia. About June 1st 1781, Abraham substituted in the place of Peter Leak in Captain Haman Knight's company, which was then attached to Colonel Richardson's Regiment General Lawson's Brigade, under General Lafayette. After his service in this regiment Abraham then returned to Henry County Virginia and remained there until the prisoners taken at the Battle of Eutaw Springs were brought to Virginia. Abraham then volunteered to guard the prisoners for one month, under the command of Captain James Torrance (Lawrence?). (Source: Abraham Bolt pension #S9282). In the fall of 1784, Abraham moved to Laurens County, Ninety-Six District South Carolina. His father, Robert Sr., and brother, Robert Jr. also moved to Laurens the same year. It's possible that his nephew, Benjamin, also relocated with the family at this time, as he is listed in the 1790 Ninety-Six District, South Carolina census. On 6 April 1789, Elizabeth S__? Received a 300-acre tract of land along Rabun Creek. A year later, she sold it to Bradford Camp of Greenville, and Abraham signed as a witness. This section of Laurens County is known as "Hickory Tavern". Abraham received his land grant along Rabun Creek in 1800. In January 1801, Abrahame is listed as a buyer at the estate sale of his brother; Robert Bolt Jr. Abraham purchases an additional 100 acres along Rabun Creek for $200 in March 1804. Abraham is listed on the first membership list available for Rabun Creek Baptist Church, dated 2 August 1828. Many of Abraham's descendants are buried in the church's cemetery. At the time of his death in 1839, Abraham's plantation consisted of 250 acres, which he bequeathed to his granddaughter, Polly. A grave marker recently erected for Abraham's wife, gives her name as "Mary Jane". They are interred in the Abraham Bolt Cemetery on the Tollison Farm in Hickory Tavern.
Rachel's date of birth is unknown, but she must have been much younger than her third husband, Robert Bolt Sr. Robert was born in 1710 and died in 1792. Rachel died on November 15th 1853. Rachel is believed to be the Rachel that is named in the 1788 will of William Hellams, "Rachel (H.P.) Allison, her son, John Parker." Robert Bolt Sr.'s deed, dated 28th August 1792, states the following, ". I the said Robert Bolt of the State of South Carolina Laurens County freeholder for & in consideration of the Love, Goodwill & affection which I have & do bear towards my wife Rachel Boult & her son William Parker Bolt..." (A witness to the deed was "Thomas Alison") The wording of the deed, in which Robert Sr. refers to William Parker Bolt as "her son" throughout the document, along with further evidence through DNA testing of descendants, has led to the theory that Rachel's sons are by her Parker marriage, and adopted the Bolt surname.
Transcriptions in "Epitaphs of Old Burying Grounds: Church Cemeteries, Laurens County S.C. " by Col. James L. Bolt and Margaret E. Bolt list the following: William P. (Pinckney) Bolt, March 5, 1790 - July 22, 1867 Anna Bolt, his wife, March 17, 1795 - Aug. 6 1863? As noted by John P. Bolt descendant, Courtenay Vaughan, the 1790 birth date for William conflicts with the 1788 will of William Hellams, which states "I give and bequeath___dau Rachel Allison and her son, John Parker." This would put William's date of birth AFTER Rachel's marriage to an Allison. So how did William end up with the Parker middle name in Robert Sr.'s will? Was William a Parker, Allison, or a Bolt? Or were Robert and Rachel so fond of the Parker family that they gave William the name for his middle name? (It is known that the Parkers were friends and neighbors to the Bolts for many generations.) Could "Pinckney" be the correct middle name for William?
John became a member of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church on April 8th 1826. Church minutes record that he became a deacon on April 7th 1832 and was ordained a Baptist minister on September 7th 1844. The minutes of February 12th 1848 include a resolution honoring the late Reverend John Bolt. John's brother, William Parker Bolt, and wife, Anna Cunningham Bolt are buried in Chestnut Ridge's cemetery.
