Eden Harris was born on April 17th 1812 at Floyd County / Montgomery County Virginia. Eden was born in that part of Montgomery County Virginia that later became Floyd County Virginia on 1831. Eden married Catherine "Kitty" Hurst on March 26th 1835 at Wythe County Virginia. Catherine was born around 1806. Catherine died before 1875. In 1839 they lived in Wythe County Virginia and it became part of Pulaski County Virginia. They lived in the Newbern area and acquired 2500 acres of land at Carroll County Virginia around Laurel Fork and Dugspur on 1852. On February 9th 1852 Eden bought 120 acres at Big Reed Island Creek from William Joseph Hurst Sr. On 1854 Eden bought 400 acres on Burke's Fork. The 1860 Census lists 2 females living with them: Darthula Black age 21 & Louise Richardson age 17.* Eden married Veleyan Harris on March 23rd 1880 at Floyd County Virginia. Veleyan was born around 1854 at Floyd County Virginia. Veleyan's mother was named Mary Ann Harris and died on February 7th 1887 at Floyd County Virginia.

Eden married Catherine Hurst at Wythe County Virginia and lived there when that part of Wythe County Virginia became part of Pulaski County Virginia in 1839. Jesse, Samuel and Frank were born in Wythe County Virginia but the next four were probably all born in Pulaski County Virginia. The family moved from Wythe County Virginia to Pulaski County Virginia probably in the early spring of 1840. They lived in the Newbern area of Pulaski County Virginia until they moved to Carroll County Virginia in 1852 when Eden bought about 2500 acres of land along the Dugspur Road and along Burhes Fork Creek around Laurel Fork and Dugspur in Carroll County Virginia. Eden also bought another 120 acres on Big Reed Island Creek Virginia from William Hurst on February 9th 1852. This was his wife's father and could be the reason he moved to Carroll County Virginia. He later bought an additional 400 acres on Burkes Fork Virginia in 1854 Book 9 Page 33 and Carroll County Deed Book. The 1860 Census lists two females living with them Darthula Black age 21 and Louise Richardson age 17. Also living with him was Frances Alderman born in 1846. They were all farmers and seemed to do well.

Eden and his family lived at Dugspur Carroll County Virginia he had a farm of 2000 dollars real estate and 685 dollars personal property as recorded on the 1860 Carroll County Census page 85 line 14 see my link. It seems like every body who has any history on Eden Harris has something a little different or nothing at all but I have at least one proof and that is the 1860 Census of Carroll County Virginia page 85 line 14 that lists Eden Harris and people living with him Catherine, William F., John H., James R., Joseph R. and Francis Alderman at the time of the census on July 21st 1860 A.W.C Nowlin ass't Marshal that I obtained a copy from the Jones Memorial Library and also a copy of the same census page from my father George Benjamin Harris files dated Oct. 03 1995 15:42 Jones Memorial Library. I will endear to do more research for proof at Jones Memorial Library and will document such proof as I find it or some one else supplies it to me so I do not know what is what until I can get some proof.

Jesse T. Harris (to date no documentation has been found for the name Thomas). Several of us as well as ardent Hurst researchers concur that the middle name for Jesse is in all probability Thompson as Thompson continues for several generations in this line and Thomas is not found at all. It is likely, but at this time pure speculation, that Thompson is Eden's mother's maiden name. Jesse T. Harris and Mildred "Millie" Elizabeth Carnahan were married Nov. 13, 1856 in Surry Co., NC. I found their marriage record there.

Jesse Harris died march 12, 1912 and was buried in Foster Cemetery in Monroe County, West Virginia, located off route 219 just south of Union, W. Va., on a hill above Indian Creek Covered Bridge, on a dirt wagon road that turns off 219 beside the home of Mrs. Roy (Susie) Riffe. His wife died on February 14, 1918 and is buried beside her husband.

Jesse was born in 1837, At the time that he enlisted he was married and had two young daughters. One, Catherine Isabel (Kit) became my Great-grandmother. Jesse served as Company Clerk and was in the Quartermaster Corp. Jesse and William survived to the end of the war. John, however, died in Lexington, KY and is buried there. After the war, Jesse and his wife, Mildred (Millie) moved to Raleigh Co., WV. There they had several more children. They later moved to Monroe Co., WV, were they lived the remainder of their lives. They are buried in Monroe County, WV Jesse was known to love music and barn dances. It was said he could dance the entire evening. He was a slender man with dark hair and a great sense of humor. Geraldine J. Leitz beloved wife of the late Eugene Leitz entered into rest on Saturday March 22, 2008. Geraldine was born in Whitby, WV and was a hairdresser. Survivors include one son, Harry (Grace) Seymour of Crewe, VA; one daughter, Delores (Bill) Wittfeldt of Merritt Island, FL; and three step-chil dren, Jerry Leitz, Jim Leitz and Stanley Leitz. She is also sur vived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Geraldine also had eight sisters and four brothers. The family will receive friends on Tuesday March 25, 2008 from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11 a.m., at Florida Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. He was born on Blue Jay, West Virginia, child of the late Fratie Carl and Mildred Miller Harris. He was an Air Force chief master sergeant retired after 33 years of service, including World War II, Korea, the Cuban missile crisis and Vietnam. He received the Bronze Star twice. James Lee Masley, 76, of St. Albans, departed this life February 1, 2007, in CAMC Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
James graduated from Stonewall High School and attended West Virginia State College where he majored in Industrial Technology.
He was a life long resident of Kanawha County and was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the US Navy as a radar operator.
Prior to joining the US Navy, James started working for United Fuel Gas driving a meter truck and meter installer. Having a love for mechanical drawing, he would watch the newspapers for architectural or drafting positions. He soon went to work for Columbia Transmission Gas Corporation where his first assignment was to draw office plans for the entire headquarters building. He worked in this capacity until he was promoted to building engineer. He retired from Columbia Gas in 1986 with more than 30 years service.
In 1940, his mother, Helen Masley, died of tuberculosis and he was adopted by Violet and Willie Landers, who preceded him in death.
James is survived by his wife, Dixie; his son James Allen Masley and his wife Debbie; his daughter Rebecca Christian and her husband Bill; two grandchildren, Tony Sabatini and Samantha Masley; half brother, Bill Landers and his wife Rachel; stepson, Joe Garrett and his wife Faith; stepdaughter, Teresa Garrett and three step grandchildren, Stacey Garrett, Brandon Garrett and Melissa Duquette; and three step great grandchildren.
James and Dixie have enjoyed their many travels, having taken numerous cruises including most East and West Caribbean Islands; Caracas, Venezuela, Mexico; and Bermuda. They have traveled to Las Vegas and Atlantic City at least once each year. They have traveled the entire United States east coast as well as Niagara Falls, Montreal, and Toronto, Canada.
They regularly worked out at the Dow (Union Carbide) Fitness Center and SC Community Center, Yoga classes, and enjoy hiking in WV State Parks. They have earned jackets and walking poles as a result of the WV State Parks incentive programs.
In the past several years, James and Dixie have developed a love of lighthouses, having visited most on the Southeast coast and climbed those that permit climbing. In 2002, they participated in a bus tour designed specifically for visiting lighthouses in South Carolina and Georgia. On that tour alone, they visited 15 lighthouses.

John Bolt Sr. Of England And Celia Amos Of Virginia
William Franklin Harris went through a lot of trials and hardships in his time and so did his brothers. Frank was born at Pulaski County Virginia on February 6th 1840. Pulaski County Virginia was formed from Montgomery County Virginia and Wythe County Virginia on 1839. The first court in Pulaski County Virginia was held on May 9th 1839. Newbern Virginia was the county seat until 1895. The courthouse burned down and was rebuilt in the town of Pulaski Virginia making it the county seat, which it still is today. The Harris family lived somewhere near Newbern Virginia. When Wade Wilburn was a boy, his mother told him that her grandfather came from Newbern Virginia to Laurel Fork Virginia. The Harris family was all farmers and when they moved from Pulaski Virginia to Carroll County Virginia probably about 1854 they acquired quite a bit of land. Most of their land was located on Dugspur Road between Dugspur Virginia and Laurel Fork Virginia. Frank enlisted in Company F of the 54th Virginia Infantry Regiment on September 9th 1861. He was assigned as courier to regiment commander Colonel Robert Trigg and was later transferred to the Pioneer Corps. Colonel Trigg commended him after the battle of Chickamauga for capturing the state flag of the 22nd Michigan Infantry Regiment during the battle of Snodgrass Hill. Wade Wilburn has visited this exact sight at the battlefield and they say it looks much like it did then. It would be tough fighting there today. A battlefield marker telling of the movements of the troops on that day marks the jumping off point of the 54th in this battle. The 54th saw some of the hardest and meanest fighting of the war. They were soundly beaten at Bentonville, North Carolina on March 19th 1865. The Regiment lost its battle flag to the 14th Michigan Regiment in this battle. The flag was returned to the Commonwealth of Virginia in ceremonies at Lansing Michigan on September 20th 1941. It was placed in the Confederate Memorial Institute by then Governor James H. Price. Frank married Narcissa Jane Bolt also known as Cis on September of 1865 only a few months after the Civil War ended. Narcissa is the child of William H. C. Bolt a soldier who at the age of forty-four was killed in the Battle of Saltville on October 1864. Frank and Cis had nine children, seven boys and two girls.

Robinett, Pocahontas, Va., Mrs. Ray Moore, Spanishburg, Mrs. Paul Fleming, Warren, Ohio, Mrs. Lyndell Mae Wilburn, Shawsville, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Flora Corner and Mrs. Ruby Henderson, both of Coopers, Mrs. Robert Creasy, Bramwell; and a brother, A. I. Bell of Coopers. Thirty-seven grandchildren also survive. Funeral rites will be conducted from the residence at Coopers Thursday at 2:30 p. m. by the Rev. He was a resident of Coopers all of his life. He was a retired employee of N & W Railway and a member of the Bramwell Masonic Lodge No. 45. He was also a veteran of World War 1. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Waldron Harris; one step-child, Bobby Lee Thompson of Kissimmee, Fla.; four sisters, Dorothy Carter of Pocahontas, Va., Lyndell Mae Wilburn of Radford, Va., Edith Butt of Coopers and Lois Fleming of California; two brothers, Elbert Lee Harris, Jr. of Warren, Ohio and George Benjamin Harris of Lynchburg, Va., and four grandchildren. ALIFF, Ward Insley, 76 of Roanoke, died Thursday, May 18, 2000. He severed his country as a navigator in the United States Navy. He retired from the Norfolk & Western Railroad with 40 years of service and was one of the few remaining steam locomotive engineers, operating the 611 on its last run. Ward was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Norma Wilburn Aliff; a child, Lisa Lynn Aliff; and grandson, Langley Hawkins; two sisters, Aline A. Wells of Norton and Margaret Basham of Roanoke; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a. m. 'Buck' Moore, 71 of Moore Hollow off the Gardner Road in Princeton, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Princeton Community Hospital. born Jan 27 1929 in Maybeury, he was the child of the late Ray and Rose Harris Moore. He was a former employee of the West Virginia Department of Highways and an independent telephone repairman. He was of the Protestant faith. In addition to his parents, one infant sister preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Alma Virginia Thompson Moore, one stepson, Wesley Hart Carrico; two foster sons, Bill Johnson and wife, Cheryl and their children, Eric and Adam, Roger Johnson and wife, Deborah and their children Jennifer and Samantha; one brother, John Moore and wife Genevieve all of Princeton. I remember Tidge well when he got out of the Air Force he lived or visited a short while before he married. He would give me rides from school. I remember visiting his parents in West Virginia. They would show me his room. They lived in the mountains and had a farm. They told me that Marijuana grew wild up there. I liked Tidge and his family very much. He told me stories of his Air Force career when I attended the family reunions in Salem. He wanted me to visit him but I never did but I wanted to.
Samuel J. Harris, 72, of Flemingsburg, Ky., died Tuesday afternoon after an apparent heart attack. Harris had been mayor of Flemingsburg at one point. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Flemingsburg Town Council and was seeking the post of mayor for a second time. He also was general manager of Cheap Chevrolet and had worked with the company since 1949. A member of the Flemingsburg Masonic Lodge, he was born at Coopers, W. Va., near Bramwell, and was a child of the late Elbert Lee and Dora Jane Bell Harris. His wife, Mrs. Hazel Miller Harris, and two sons preceded him in death. Friends from all around gathered at the Kemp home near Cross Roads Store in Rockbridge County Sunday afternoon to offer felicitations to Mrs. C. E. Kemp on her 80th birthday.
Six of her seven children, a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren were there and those who participated at the open house were Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Weeks of Fairfield; Mrs. Calvin Tyree of Mt. Sidney; Mr. and Mrs. Guy Kemp of Fairfield; Mrs. W. P. Mabry of Waynesboro; Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Kemp of Roanoke; Mrs. j. j. Sutphin of Wellville; Mrs. Paul Heslep; Mrs. Albert Kemp, Posie Kemp, Jackie Kemp all of Fairfield and Anne Kemp of Roanoke. Many were the congratulatory messages and gifts presented this octogenarian.
Catherine Elizabeth Harris Kemp, a native of Carroll County, came to Rockbridge with her seven small children one year after her husband, William Albert Kemp, died and settled on the farm where she now lives. They had been farming near East Radford but this woman decided she was going in business for herself and she purchased 120 acres of land and later added 30 more.
Well informed about crops in general and cleaver in the use of farm implements she gradually added to her supply until today her farm is as well equipped as any in the community. And she was able to operate the machinery too. It was nothing for her to hitch up a two-horse plow or wagon and work all day. All kinds of grain were raised but the chief products now are hay and pasture land for her herds of cattle. Her successful farming has been due to hard work and good planning.
For more than 35 years Mrs. Kemp has brought her garden and dairy products to Buena Vista. At first she used a horse and buggy to deliver products and many a cold winter morning this undaunted woman rode the nine miles to this city with a lighted lantern at her feet. Once, she recalled, her horse became frightened at an approaching train and attempted to cross the track ahead of the rushing train, but she pulled the reins hard and quickly forcing the animal to make a sudden turn. This upset the buggy throwing milk cans, vegetables, fruits and fowls here and there but she held on the reins and was not hurt.
Later a pick up truck was used to transport produce and although she does not bring in as much as she used to she comes every Tuesday, but a daughter comes with her and drives the car.
For a number of years Mrs. Kemp has lived alone and although her son, Guy, who lives on the place has assumed the management of the farm, she works her own garden, milks two cows, attends to a flock of chickens and does all of her housework. She is a staunch member of the Old Stone Presbyterian Church at Timber Ridge and attributes her good health to her ability not to worry and the fact those years ago she learned to put her trust in the lord. One of her greatest pleasures now is the enjoyment she gets from watching television. She has her special programs.
She has always answered the call to the sick and needy in the community and she literally fulfills Sam Walter Foss' definition of friendship "Let me live in a house by the road and be a friend to man."

40 year resident of the New Hope area, died late Wednesday
evening, August 9 1995 at Augusta Medical Center in Fisherville.
She was born August 6th 1908 in Carroll County, a daughter of
William Albert and Catherine Harris Kemp. She was a member of the
New Hope United Methodist Church, where she was active in the
United Methodist Women, taught Sunday School and held a number of
church offices, as well as offices in the New Hope area High Noon
Club. She retired as Administrator of the District Home in 1971
with 26 years of service. Survivors include a son, Dr. Hunter P.
Mabry, now of Waynesboro; a daughter, Mrs. Jarvis (Marie) Lowe of
Foxworth, Mississippi; one sister, Oleita Weeks of Fairfield Va.
four grandchildren, Philip James Mabry of Pittsburgh, Penn., Ms.
Ruth Mabry Al-Behlanic of Oman, Mrs. Marie Graham of Columbia,
Miss., and William Walden Kester of Hattiesburg, Miss. seven

17th, 1987, one great great grandchild and a number of brothers
and sisters preceded her in death. Services will be held 4 p.m.
Sunday at New Hope United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev.
Howard Smith, with burial following in the church cemetery.
Active pall bearers will be W. L. (Bill) Custard, Carl Bulle,
James E. Hammer Jr., Tommy Waybright, Henry Breeding, and Dean
Powers. Honorary pall bearers will be members of the Mabry and
Shiflet United Methodist Women's Circle. The family will receive
friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Waynesboro Chapel of
Etter-Reynolds Funeral Services and other times at the residence.

Hunter graduated from V.P.I. had a B.D. Degree from Emory University and a PhD.D. from Boston University in Sociology of Religion and Social Ethics. He and Esther met while he was serving as Pastor of the Central Methodist Church at Kidapawn Philippines. They went to India in July of 1969 where he has served on the staff of the United Theological College Bangalore India that is one of the main Protestant Seminaries in India. He has taught at all levels and in recent years has been teaching at the post-graduate level and directing several research projects. In 1986 Hunter and Fisher were on a year's leave from India and he was teaching in the Washington D.C. area and speaking at various United Methodist Churches both are United Methodist Missionaries as well as holding conferences and seminars. Dr. Esther Galima Mabry has been on the staff of the Church of South India Hospital Bangalore India.
